Studio Prairie is housed in a 19th century farmhouse near Winston, Salem, NC. While Kyle was in residence there, he was inspired by the rich history of the area. He sourced pottery from local antique stores to use in his still lifes, drawn to the way it quietly told the story of the surrounding land, a region so rich in clay and firewood that the craft has continuously flourished there since it was practiced by the Cherokee. In the five photographs in All You Carry, Kyle activated the frames by pouring water from a clay pitcher into a glass bowl. In response these images, Leah wrote a two-line poem that questions whether the “activation” of love—the pouring of oneself into another—can be depleting even when it is sacred and full of light.
